Tangalla police officer arrested for raping schoolgirl!

A newly recruited sub inspector affiliated to Tangalla Police Station was day before (22) night taken into custody by Tangalla Police on suspicion on an accusation of an incident of rape.

According to a complaint lodged with Mr. Laksiri Geethal, Police Superintendent of Tangalla Division by a schoolgirl aged 16 years and 8 months, the said officer was taken into custody. Her

complaint says that she was abused by this police officer against her wishes. The Police Superintendent who took action over the complaint on instructions given to Police Inspector Mr. Lalith Hettiarachchi of Tangalla Police, with the aid of Child and Women's Bureau of Tangalla Division had taken the sub inspector into custody and the Police Superintendent had proceeded to suspend his services with immediate effect.

The arrested amateur sub inspector was expected to be produced before Tangalla Magistrate Court yesterday (23). The complainant schoolgirl was admitted to Tangalla Basic Hospital for a medical examination. On instructions of Police Superintendent in charge of Tangalla Division Mr. Laksiri Geethal and under supervision of Assistant Police Inspector Mr. Athula de Silva, Tangalla Headquarters Police Inspector Mr. Lalith Hettiarachchi together with officers of Tangalla Division Child and Women's Bureau are conducting further investigations in this respect.

Operation this week to nab Army deserters!

An island wide operation will begin this week to arrest Army deserters and those who harbour them, said Army chief Lt. Gen. Mahesh Senanayake.

A month long period of amnesty for the deserters to surrender and leave the service officially ended on November 22. Senanayake said the arrested persons would be tried and given a two year prison term as per provisions in the penal code.

During the amnesty period, 11,208 men, including 24 officers, surrendered to the Army. However, 28,000 Army deserters are still evading the authorities.

DIGs accuse IGP of tapping their phones

Senior DIGs complained to the police commission on November 24 that IGP Pujith Jayasundara has tapped their telephones and also obtained detailed bills.

They informed the commission that the telephone numbers included those belonging to journalists. Jayasundara has used TID’s DIG Nalaka Silva to do that.

The IGP was absent at the DIGs’ meeting with the police commission, attended for the first time by senior DIGs S.M. Wickremasinghe, who is in charge of the security of the president, and Chandana Wickremaratne.

A tense situation erupted at Gintota between a Sinhalese and a Muslim group, Asian Mirror reliably learns. The Police sources said some business signages and private properties got damaged as a result of the brawl.

Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayaka has immediately directed to deploy the Police Special Task Force (STF) to control the situation. The Police add that the situation has been brought under control by the STF, although there is still some tension in the area. Initial investigations revealed that the situation had occurred following a football match.

Four People Already Arrested Over Gintota Clash: Police Directed To use Teargas And Baton Charge..

Police have arrested four people in connection with the Gintota clash. The security has been beefed up in the area to prevent outsiders from approaching the village. The Police Special Task force has been deployed along all main roads in the area, the Law and Order Ministry sources said. They also added, the Police have been directed to use teargas and baton charge if some group group attempts to create disturbance.

Several Events For ‘Maveerar Naal’ – Heroes Day Held In The Northern Province

Several events were held in memory of fallen heroes on ‘Maveerar Naal’ or ‘Heroes Day’ in the Northern Province, including at the Jaffna University.

Celebration for ‘Maveerar Naal’ is seen as a contentious issue as the people of the North pay respect to many of those who died in the fight against the Sri Lanka Army.

The government has however not stopped the people of the North from paying their respects to the slain. LTTE leader Vellupullai Prabhakaran was a strong proponent of ‘Maveerar Naal’ and would make a rare appearance on this day to address the people.
