A CA panel comprising justices L.T.B. Dehideniya and Shiran Gunaratne was taking up on December 04 a petition filed by MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara. The respondents cited were the Ports Pinister, Ministry Secretary, Director General of Commercial Shipping Ajith Wickrema Seneviratne and SLPA chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake.
The petitioner claims there is a shipping monopoly in cargo transportation. A team of lawyers led by Faiz Mustafa is appearing for the petitioner. So far no Ports Minister has formulated laws and regulations to end the monopoly in commercial shipping as per the Commercial Shipping (amendment) Act no. 52 of 1971. We believe Minister Mangala Samaraweera has received the Writ Order by now.
Samaraweera has been saying there is a monopoly in shipping industry. The general public might not be interested in this industry, but this really is a serious national issue. Therefore, Lanka News Web will bring a detailed series of articles on this matter.
