Anyone can resign, I will not – Nimal Siripala

Nimal Siripala de Silva, S.B. Dissanayake, Susil Premajayantha, Dilan Perera, T.B. Ekanayake and Dayasiri Jayasekara, who want to see victory for the no-faith motion against the PM, were among a group of SLFP ministers who met yesterday.  There, a majority of them expressed the view that they had not ethical right to remain in the government as defeating the PM means defeating the government. The SLFP hopes to form a government with de Silva as the PM. Therefore, all of them suggested that he should be the one to resign first.

Alarmed by that, de Silva said, “No, No. I cannot resign. Anyone else can resign. I will not resign.” He said that he should remain a minister until an airline deal is struck. Pointing to the complaint lodged by his wife against him at the bribery commission, he said, “If I lose the portfolio now, I will be upto my neck. Then, how can I do politics?”

The others asked him how he could remain in the government without shame after voting against the PM. He said, “In a few days, it will be alright. It will be OK to act if nothing had happened.”

Ekanayake said he could resign any moment. However, Susantha Punchinilame and Nishantha Mutuhettigama, who also signed the motion, spoke against resigning. The other ministers told among themselves after de Silva’s remarks that the god will have to save the country if such a person is made the PM.
