Plan to appoint Susil Premajayanth for position of leader of Opposition.

Political sources reveal these days that a plan is underway to appoint Mp of Sri Lanka Freedom Party Susil Premajayanth for the post of Opposition leader in parliament with the support of the Joint Opposition.

After the Sri Lanka Freedom Party left the government and joined hands with the opposition, it is expected to acquire majority powers of the opposition and carry out that task

and some Mps connected to the Joint Opposition has had a lengthy discussion with 16 members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party about appointing Premajayanth to the position of Opposition leader.

However, the suggestion for procedures to be adopted in this context to appoint Susil Premajayanth who left his position as Mp to be appointed as the Opposition leader was not met with much of a pleasant response with certain Mps from among the group of 16. When considering the legal aspect in this connection since the SLFP has not functioned as a singular party, but as an alliance and still are operating as a joint-party government; ideas were expressed that initially it is mandatory that the speaker should accept that the SLFP is a party belonging to the Opposition. As there are certain ministers who shield the government in a big way, it has been found that it is a difficult task to make this change.

Whatever it is, however much discussions take place, there will not be changes in the post of Opposition leader of parliament, political sources say. It is reported that leader of the Tamil National Alliance to a large extent would function until his official tenure in parliament would be over. A certain Mp of the Joint Opposition has responded to a question posed by the media in this connection saying that Mps of the Joint Opposition is prepared to give the necessary support to grab the Sri Lanka Freedom Party from the government and that it has been discussed about this topic on occasions when SLFP Mps had got together. Operations are already underway to lure 16 SLFP ministers of the Maithri faction while 3 of the said group are showing their consent to join the Maithri faction, as reported yesterday.
