PM Ranil Wickremesinghe and ministers Mangala Samaraweera, Malik Samarawickrama, Kabir Hashim and Arjuna Ranatunga met president Maithripala Sirisena this morning to discuss the SLFP’s decision with regard to the no-confidence motion against the PM.
Several SLFP ministers have said the party has taken a decision and that the PM should resign, or else that they will vote in support of the motion.
SLFP’s view
Samarawickrama inquired from the president about his view on that. The president replied that the party had no firm stand. The SLFP ministers are divided into three groups and only one group wants to protect the PM, he said. Another group wants to support the motion, while the third one takes a middle path.
Then, the president declared his personal view. He told the PM, “You will win. That is what I think. So, do not get excited or alarmed.” A considerable number of SLFP ministers want to protect the PM, and he said he did not believe the motion would succeed.
Cabinet reshuffle
The president suggested that they met again on April 06 to discuss the scenario after the no-confidence motion. They also agreed for a full cabinet reshuffle on that day. The president agreed not to give any positions to SLFP ministers who would vote in support of the motion. The meeting was cordial, unlike one on the previous day.
