The 28-year- old Dissanayake made a valiant bid for the gold medal but his last two attempts in the clean-and- jerk, lifting 163 kg, failed giving Welshman Gareth Evans victory with a total lift of 299 kg. Dissanayake lifted 137 in snatch and 160 in clean- and-jerk for a combined total of 297.
“He gave it his best shot and we are all very proud of him,” an overjoyed Suresh Subramaniam, president of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka said. “Our weightlifters have done the country proud.”
Earlier in the day at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre, there was heartbreak for Chamari Warnakulasuriya in the Women’s 53 kg when she couldn’t straighten her legs in his final attempt of 104kg in the clean-and- jerk to give Canadian Rachel Leblanc-Bazinet who aggregated 181 kg the bronze medal. Warnakulasuriya finished fourth with a total of 172 kg.
India’s Sanjita Khumukcham won the gold medal with a total lift of 192 kg while Loa Dika Toua of Papua New Guinea taking the silver with 182 kg.
Meanwhile in boxing in the Men’s 46-49kg class, Thiwanka Ranasinghe reached the last eight by defeating South African Siyabulela Mphongoshi on points. Ranasinghe will bid to enter the medal rounds next Tuesday when he comes up against Vanuvatu’s Berry Namri in the quarterfinals.
