Ven. Wekandawala Rahula Thera of the Centre said the CID would technically evaluate the tape. He expressed confidence that details of the many killings of elephants in recent times would be revealed from the tape.
Sri Lanka has one of the highest elephant death rates, which is two every day, mostly murdered, said the Thera. Noting that the 80 per cent of the country’s forest cover in the 1980s has now dwindled to 16 pc, the Centre attributes it to the increasing human-elephant conflict. An elephant management national policy introduced in 2008 too, has been a failure.
