Both the UNP and the SLFP have been trying to form their own government. The latest is that the SLFP and the Mahinda faction will join forces to form a government. Several rounds of talks took place this morning, with JO MPs meeting president Maithripala Sirisena and minister Susil Premajayantha having a discussion with Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Following the president-JO MPs meeting, Kumar Welgama told the media that the president was looking into the legal provisions to remove the prime minister.
On 08 January 2015, a majority of voters gave a mandate to change the corrupt regime of the plunderers. However, the above reports indicate a return of the very same corrupt, murderous plunderers to power.
2018 LG polls mandate
The just concluded LG polls decided who would rule the villages, and did not give a mandate to change the government. If that election result changes the government, that would be anti-democratic and go against the 2015 mandate.
After the election, SLPP supporters have been harassing and attacking their opponents. The Muslim Council wrote to the SLPP chairman about these incidents, which show the Mahinda loyalists have not learnt a lesson from the 2015 defeat. Their motive is clear. They want to get permission from Maithripala Sirisena, who challenged Mahinda in 2015, to restore their despotic regime.
