He was detained at Dubai airport while in transit to the US. There is an arrest warrant issued against him by Sri Lanka over his involvement in the MiG purchase fraud during the period he was the ambassador to Russia. The court has also cancelled his passport and issued a red warrant.
Sri Lanka police are yet to be officially informed about his arrest. The police media spokesman said steps would be taken to bring him home. A seven member team comprising officials of the FCID, CID, Attorney General’s and Immigration and Emigration Departments and the Foreign Ministry was due to depart for Abu Dhabi last night (06).
This has now become a diplomatic issue, as Abu Dhabi officials are undecided to whom it should hand over the man. Also, court action against him by that country is under consideration.
