Referring to some recent media reports saying that she has already resigned, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that High Commissioner Wijewardene will conclude her contract only by 31 March 2018, on her own volition.
In the meantime, informed sources say that although HMG found her efforts to co-opt MPs through lavish all expenses paid holidays to Sri Lanka disconcerting, the High Commission’s dubious and bizarre methods of trying to change the narrative of the civil war alarming as it went towards undermining the UNHRC resolution.
UK is the most important stakeholder of the UNHRC. It also has significant equity in resolution 30-1 and 34-1 that pertain to Sri Lanka.
The final straw was the outrageous behaviour of the defence attaché that threatened to undermine the U.K. as a safe haven and gave oxygen to those who seek to undermine its security.
