Law & order under president until Fonseka returns

Law & order under president until Fonseka returns
He is due back on February 25.

The Rajapaksa family is very much worried by the news that this ministry would be given to Fonseka, with Mahinda Rajapaksa telling prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to keep the ministry under the UNP. He has said that either Vajira Abeywardena or Gayantha Karunatilake would be the best person to be appointed the law and order minister. The PM responded by saying that he would have to forgo it if the president wanted it, adding that he did not want to intervene in the president’s affairs.

Meanwhile, Fonseka has noted that he entered politics not with the intention to hold positions, but said that he would show results within six months if given the ministry.

He said the law and order ministry did nothing in the past three years, pointing out that it was the justice ministry that had to implement the decisions taken by that ministry. There was a tug-of-war between the two ministries when Wijedasa Rajapakshe was the law and order minister, Fonseka said.

CID officers were not given freedom to do their job, and instead of catching the thieves, Wijedasa Rajapakshe protected them. His remark in parliament that he would not allow the arrest of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa until he held the portfolio alone was enough evidence for that, Fonseka said.
