India is unhappy over the present government’s pro-China policy and is trying to cultivate the SLPP, whose symbol is ‘flower bud’, as the third political force in Sri Lanka, they say.
Bringing Mahinda back
After Mahinda Rajapaksa lost the 08 January 2015 presidential election, he handed over the SLFP leadership too to Maithripala Sirisena and left politics. It is India which is behind bringing Mahinda back as a popular political figure within a short period. It funded all his political activities, including the last May Day rally. The Indian central government is not directly involved, but it is giving funding through various organizations.
India fully funded the joint opposition’s May Day rally in 2017. There were not enough reasons for a public opinion against the present regime at the time. However, India spent money and got Basil and others to create such an opinion. State intelligence has warned the government about that. However, no one is opening the mouth against India, as everybody fears making India an enemy.
Extremist India
Saying a few things about India, that country is a country sunk in religious extremism. That was such that the Pope was not invited to India during his Asia tour involving Bangladesh and Myanmar. Hinduism is losing its grip to oppose cultural diversity.
Indian high commissioner Tharanjith Singh Sandhu played a key role in toppling the 2004 UNP regime. Presently too, he is working to create political instability in Sri Lanka.
Basil cannot become an MP
Basil has many connections with India. He was active during the previous regime to maintain friendships with India. Therefore, India chose him to do its bidding this time. If one takes Geetha Kumarasinghe’s dual citizenship matter as precedence, Basil is a person who cannot become an MP in Sri Lanka again. However, he is so busy in politics, because he is doing a contract he was given by someone.
He did his best in the past few days to prevent NFF’s Weerakumara Dissanayake from joining the government and obtaining a ministerial position. He has been advised by India to bribe MPs who try to crossover. We will be able to see how Basil bribes MPs and even candidates at the local government election.
He is a person who fled the country after the 2015 presidential election defeat. He returned some time later. He is a US citizen. Therefore, Rajapaksa camp seniors such as Dinesh Gunawardena are unhappy and dejected that he is appearing as the key figure.
Final request
Finally, we should say that India should not be underestimated, because it was India that nurtured the LTTE, and then destroyed it. To serve India’s wants, Mahinda destroyed Prabhakaran and accepted the responsibility for that murder, but five years later, India was instrumental in toppling his regime. India is a world power in investigation and analysis. Therefore, we stress to ‘Yahapaalana’ government that it should not underestimate India.
