In the meantime, UNP chairman Malik Samarawickrama is trying his best to get Wimal to join the UNP. Wimal’s family wants him to join the UNP or the SLFP and get some compromise over the court cases against him. That is because he is likely to go behind bars very soon.
Wimal too, is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. He has asked his family as to how he could join, with his trousers on, a government he has been criticizing so much. His wife answered that if he remained in the SLPP any longer, he was certain to lose his trousers as well. Therefore, a political somersault could be expected from him by the second week of January.
He has sent a message to president Maithripala Sirisena that he, together with Dinesh Gunawardena, Udaya Gammanpila and others, was willing to join him, if he removed the UNP from the government and formed a single government.
