Piyasena fills the Galle district MP position that fell vacant from Gita Kumarasinghe. He has a long record in the SLFP. A graduate of Peradeniya University, he first contested the 1989 parliamentary election. Until 2015, he remained undefeated, serving as MP, deputy minister, and cabinet minister. He is an experienced and senior politician.
However, his son Randima is a character who has close links with the south’s underworld. There were reports of his links with Makandure Madhush and Kosgoda Suji. Therefore, we will keep a close watch on Piyasena’s conduct as the law and order state minister. We remain with you as long as you work according to the law. We would like to remind you that you will be treated in the same manner the Rajapaksas were treated if you pamper the underworld.
It is a question as to what the president intends doing through Piyasena’s appointment. This position was previously to be given to Weerakumara Dissanayake. However, he refused it, since it is a ministry under the UNP and he did not want to get into unnecessary trouble. He should be commended for that. Law and order minister Sagala Ratnayake is prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s chief of staff. We do not say he is a perfect person. However, this should be considered as an act by the president to pinch the UNP.
