Keheliya to return to UNP

On the UNP leadership’s instructions, party chairman Malik Samarawickrema has held talks with Keheliya on his return. Malik has been able to settle Lakshman Kiriella’s opposition to Keheliya’s return, with a promise that the minister will be given the no. 1 national list position at the next general election and also that his daughter Chami will be given nominations at the upcoming provincial council election.

Keheliya first tried to rejoin the UNP on 10 January 2015. But, Ranil Wickremesinghe dragged that on due to various reasons. Although he has joined Mahinda Rajapaksa, Keheliya is a strong UNPer.

Keheliya has promised the UNP chairman that he would crossover along with two powerful figures in the joint opposition.

Meanwhile, UNP supporters in Kandy say this will cause Lakshman to suffer the same fate that befell Tyronne Fernando, who failed to make it to parliament despite a promise that he would be given the no. 1 national list position.
