Following the recent example given by prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe together with his aunt Iranganie Serasinghe, ex-president Chandrika Kumaratunga too, did a jig at Taj Samudra on Friday (19), at the wedding party of the son of Rajan Brito, Aitken Spence Deputy Chairman and Sri Lankan Airline Board Member.
Instead of clinging onto their ‘Kurahan Shawls’, it is heartening to see politicians taking things easy and having some fun. Also, that shows their courage. However, that courage should be shown also to make the state secular and ensure rights of all religions, to remove the outdated laws left for us by the English, to remove the absurd laws against same-sex matters, to wipe out laws that deny equality. Only then, the supremacy of the law can be established. That will ensure that the country will not get internationally isolated. Also, the country will not have to beg for foreign aid.
If the country’s leaders apply the same easiness in mind they show during these dances when dealing with the above issues, what N.M. said would become a reality – a day will dawn when all citizens alike can do ballroom dancing.
