UNP-SLFP understanding to continue
However, minister Mangala Samaraweera met president Maithripala Sirisena as a special representative of prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and said the UNP would withdraw from the MoU if the SLFP entered into an agreement with the joint opposition.

A proposal was made to prevent clashes as the two parties will contest the local government polls on their own. Minister Malik Samarawickama too, met the president in Kandy and discussed this matter.

Meanwhile, ex-president Chandrika Kumaratunga asked civil society organizations at a meeting to mediate in a possible dispute between the two parties.

As a result, Wickremesinghe has instructed his MPs not to criticize the president without permission from him or the party’s general secretary.
