The SIs, as six separate groups, petitioned the Supreme Court to get their promotion issue resolved. On a promise given to courts by the IGP, a committee headed by senior DIG C.D. Wickramaratne inquired into the matter and submitted a report to the police chief three weeks ago.
Some of these SIs count around 22 years of service. Around 1,400 are due to retire next year.
This attitude by the IGP shows he does not care about his juniors. Sources say he will have a new excuse, the upcoming local government polls, saying no promotions are possible during election time. But, top officials point out the two matters are unrelated and the recommendations were made on a SC order.
Subject minister Sagala Ratnayake is unaware of the plight of these SIs, and keeps silent. Such is the efficiency of Sri Lanka police and the law and order ministry.
