The UNP was under internal pressure for a change in its top rung, following the local government polls defeat. Party reorganizing activities were put off until March as a result of the racist clashes in Kandy. MPs have been calling for a change in the leadership, and saying the party reorganizing was aimed at forming a UNP regime in 2020.
However, that change is likely to be confined to the general secretary position only, with incumbent Kabir Hashim to be replaced with Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. Ranil Wickremesinghe is to remain as the party leader.
Wickremesinghe appointed three committees to bring about reforms to the party, whose recommendations are to be discussed in the coming days. But, that is likely to be an eyewash only.
