However, the actual reason for his leaving the country is to express his displeasure over the submitting of a no-confidence motion against PM Ranil Wickremesighe. Basil is of the view that Wickremesinghe’s remaining in power will be advantageous for the SLPP. However, Dinesh Gunawardena, Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila and others have gone against his view and handed over the no-confidence motion to the speaker.
Mahinda too, is of the view that the attempt would end up in failure. He has not signed the document. According to him, only 90-odd votes can be obtained in support of the no-confidence motion.
