Co-cabinet spokesman minister Rajitha Senaratna yesterday (21) announced that 2 provincial politicians have been taken into custody and that all investigations have been launched to apprehend 3 others politicians of that same party. A heated situation developed in parliament sometime back because the minister had made accusations at a

media briefing without quoting the relevant identity. However yesterday he did reveal those names.

Apart from the above, action to take into custody an MP operating under the Pohottuwa symbol for being linked to incidents raising friction among races in Kandy would be carried out in the very near future, the minister said. The minister who said that the name of the politician concerned would be divulged later and further went on to state that provincial council member, Gamini Rajapaksha of Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna in connection with the attack on Menikhinna Muslim mosque in Kandy and Samantha, owner of Araliya Hotel and also the provincial council member of Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna in relation to the attack on the Muslim mosque in Digana, have been arrested.

He also said that investigations are underway to arrest Deepthi who was linked to Pallekele attacks and had contested the elections from the Podu Jana Peramuna ticket and 2 other monks who contested at Podu Jana Peramuna provincial council elections. Mr. Ranjith Maddumabandara, minister for Law and Order announced here that 314 persons connected to this incident have already been taken into custody. The minister further revealed that 264 Sinhalese suspects, 41 Muslim suspects and 9 others from different races have been arrested. 5 persons and Amiththa Weerasingha who directed Mahason Balakaya were those from outside areas of Kandy, it had been confirmed, he added.
