The decision was announced after a meeting held with officials including J. Dadallage, Advisor to Prime Minister's Public Relations Office, Edward Malwattage, Chairman of the University Trade Union Joint Committee and few others at the Prime Minister’s Office. According to Malwattage, the decisions were not in favor and satisfactory of the Union, therefore, they will not sit for further discussion until their demands are fully granted.
More than 10,000 non-academic staff, including 24 unions went on a nationwide strike demanding facilities and standards agreed by an agreement signed in 2016 which includes, increase in the salary structure, insurance services, creating an appropriate pension system, removal of restrictions on promotions etc.
As a result of the protest, universities remains standstill, and examinations are postponed until further notice by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
