Bangla Desh team slash glass after issue created in last over --
What really happened?
Though the Bangla Desh trounced Sri Lanka in the 20/20 cricket match played yesterday at Premadasa Grounds, foreign media have expressed their concern about the damage done to the 'gentlemen's nature' of the game of cricket as a result of the unruliness of Bangla Desh players in connection with incidents that
transpired in that final over.What happened was a temper that flared up for not having given a no-ball and the team captain had issued instructions for the 'team-mates to stop the match and to come back', leaving the match abandoned and also getting involved with Sri Lankan players in the process. Once they won the match, the Bangla Desh players had made fun of the Sri Lankan players and had even smashed up the glass door of the dressing room.
This ugly incident began at the time Bangla Desh was in a somewhat precarious situation of collecting 12 runs in the last over. They were of the mentality that they were not in a position to win the game and to add to it, the first ball bowled by Isuru Udana was a bouncer which was considered a dot ball. The very next ball delivered too soared high above and the batsman missed the ball and when the batsmen exchanged their ends to get a run, a run out was seen when the ball was aimed at the wicket where the umpire was and he was ruled run out.
This ball which was a bouncer not being signalled as a no ball started a row at a moment their mentality was at a low ebb having to collect 12 runs with only 4 balls remaining to their lot. The Bangla Deshis began to complain that when the additional umpire signalled it as a no ball, the other umpire had negated it. Due to this situation, there was a delay of about 15 minutes in the game. On this occasion Nurul Hassan who was an additional player of the Bangla Desh side was seen barging into the midst of the grounds and engaging in an argument with Sri Lankan captain Thisara Perera and in the process Kusal Mendis too got involved in the fracas. Later an acquaintance of their's pulled him away from this skirmish. Subsequently, Bangla Desh captain Shakib came out from the dressing-room with the entire team and began to enter into a tussel with the umpires and had in anger displayed an impression of 'we can't play like this ... we're going away!'. So saying he summoned his batsmen who were at the middle of the pitch to stop the game and come back. Their contention was that since all umpires in this tournament were Sri Lankans, they had given their decisions in favour of their mother country.
Whatever it is, the umpires intervened and recommenced the match. As already said, there were 4 balls remaining towards the target of 12 runs when the Bangla Deshis managed to get 4, 2 and 6 in the last three balls and thus rush towards their victory. With this win the Bangla Desh players started celebrating themselves by rushing into the midst of the grounds. On this occasion their frolic of 'mimicking the snake' was seen being displayed, which they did in the past games against Sri Lanka.
After winning the match by portraying rowdy-type characteristics of the game, a particular player had told something to Kusal Mendis and the moment where he lost his temper and hastened to retort was even seen on the television screen. Whatever it is, both teams were not present at the award ceremony and it was seen that only the players were present to accept their awards. What was reported later was that the Bangla Desh players had smashed up glasses of the dressing-room which was allocated to them at Premadasa grounds. Photographs of it was flashed across foreign media too. In this connection the referee has conducted an inspection and a worker of the restaurant has testified that a Bangla Desh player was responsible for this act. However the identity of the player concerned has not been revealed. In the next few days the person who was engaged in this third-grade act would be exposed through CCTV inquiries. In the meantime the Bangla Desh Cricket Board has accepted the blooper. The Bangla Desh Cricket Board has conveyed a message tendering their apologies in respect of this incident and has further informed that they are prepared to meet costs of the damage. Reports have been published that the ICC would be taking action with regard to this vagabond-type behaviour; however their decision has so far not been reported.
