Singapore issues travel alert

Singapore, an insignificant market for tourism to Sri Lanka, is the latest to issue a travel advisory.

Its Foreign Ministry in a communiqué issued on 7 March, advised its citizens to be careful when visiting Kandy, the area where the recent Sinhala-Muslim disturbances took place.

Significantly, due to the latest developments, only five countries have thus far issued travel advisories on the island. They are Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Australia and Canada. Additionally, two organizations namely the European Union (EU) and the 57-member strong, Saudi-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), have expressed concern over the recent developments in the island, but have refrained from issuing any advisory on Sri Lanka.

For instance, Germany and France, Sri Lanka's fourth and fifth largest tourism markets according to the latest data and which are also members of the EU, as per January tourism figures, have not issued any travel advisory on the island.
