The minister said that he took this decision considering the need of taking immediate action for the protection of children.
He stated that this decision would allow school principles to inform provincial or zonal education directors about the school’s situation and subsequently make a decision. He further said that schools in Rathnapura, Nivithigala and Dehiowita education zones will be closed today (21) and tomorrow (22) due to adverse weather in Rathnapura.
Irrigation engineer in-charge of Ginganga Chamila Weerakkodi said that the flood started at around 6 am today (21) in Ginganga, Baddegama area due to heavy rain.
Assistant Director of Disaster Management Center Galle, lieutenant colonel Dampath Rathnayake said that 7 provincial secretariats in Galle district are affected by flooding. He further mentioned that many lowlands and roads are flooded in Neluwa, Thawalama, Nagoda, Niyagama, Baddegama and Bope-Poddala.
He emphasized that the people in Ginganga area must be vigilant and water level in certain areas in Neluwa and Thawalama has increased up to 5 feet.
Disaster Management Center further says that the water level of Kelaniya river is increasing and people living in Colombo, Kelaniya, Kaduwela, Kolonnawa, Hanwella, Dompe, Biyagama, Ruwanwella and Daraniyagala must be cautious.
The water level of Manik and Kalu rivers are also increasing, the Department of Irrigation said.
Weather forecast issued by the Department of Meteorology says showers or thundershowers can be expected in Western, Southern, Central and North-Western provinces. National Building Research Organization said that there is a risk of landslides in Rathnapura, Nuwaraeliya, Kalutara, Kegalle, Kandy and Galle, if the rain in next few hours exceeds 150 mm.
