US attains their first black female nominee for governor

This win therefore makes Abrams the first black woman in the US to be classified as a being a nominee for governor. 

Abrams herself represents Georgia, a predominately conservative state in southern eastern US. 

In the race, Ms Abrams managed to beat white 40-year old state representative, Stacey Evans. It has been reported that Ms Abrams claimed an impressive three quarters of the vote. 

Also joining Ms Abram’s victory is Amy McGrath, a former Marine fighter pilot who represents Kentucky. McGrath herself managed to defeat her Democratic opponent Lexington Mayor Jim Gray for a house seat in the state. 

Commenting upon her win and also that of Ms Abrams, Ms McGrath told American news corporation CNN that: "It's very clear that people are looking for more women." 
 
The victories of Abrams and McGarth do indeed give support to the idea that people are now starting to realise the strong nature of female political candidates. These attitudes can be said to be in light of the contemporary feminist movements of #MeToo and #TimesUp. 

At present, the US has six female governors. However, by virtue of the success of these two female candidates, this number is well expected to increase. 

Ms Abrams is set up to compete in the high-stakes mid-contest in November. If she wins, then Ms Abrams will be declared the first black woman to lead the state of Georgia as a governor. 

The nominee has won the support of Hilary Clinton, who is the former First Lady of the United States and Democratic nominee for President in the 2016. 

Furthermore, Ms Abrams has also won the recognition of American national organisations such as MoveOn, EMILY’s List and Planned Parenthood.
