However, president Maithripala Sirisena has objected, and wants Prof. Lalith Samarakoon appointed the SEC chairman. He got down Samarakoon from a US university and posted him as head of the national economic council, previously headed by the PM, which he disbanded and appointed members anew. Many say that despite being a professor economics, Samarakoon lacks the qualifications to be the SEC chairman.
Most investigations by the SEC have now come to a standstill, and a person who is capable of reviving those investigations should be appointed to succeed Thilak Karunaratne, who had resigned as the SEC chairman.
