Mahathir Mohammed to be invited to be the chief guest for 71st Independent Ceremony
As reported, the reasons for the above-mentioned invitation are the close friendship between the President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena and the President of Malaysia Mahathir Mohammed and also President Maithripala Sirisena’s interest in Mahathir Mohammed’s political vision. The presidents believes that the people of Sri Lanka must hear how Mahathir Mohammed built Malaysia in his words and it will steer the direction of economic, social and political development in the country to a new path.

Although the president was expecting to invite Mahathir Mohammed to celebrate two years of victory on 8th January 2017, it was not possible to do so since the Foreign Ministry was not able to do the necessary arrangements.

However, it is reported that the president is confident that the Foreign Ministry will not obstruct and support to bring President Mahathir Mohammed to Sri Lanka for the next Independent Day Ceremony. It is said that China might oppose this, since Mahathir Mohammed is politically anti-China person and that is the reason why the Foreign Ministry disliked to see him coming for the 8th January ceremony. Political critics say that Sri Lanka will have to pay attention to China’s movements in the future.

mahathir 1The Sri Lankan President and Mahathir Mohammed had secretly met on 17th December, 2016 at Hotel Continental in Kuala Lumpur during the president’s official Malaysian tour. Although the then Malaysian leader Najib Rasaq had tightened security to avert the meeting, Mahathir Mohammed was able to meet the Sri Lankan president.

The two leaders had extensively discussed the January 8th political change. Malaysian media had revealed the photographs of the meeting, reporting that Mahathir Mohammed will learn a lot of things for his political campaigns.

People who are aware of Mahathir Mohammed’s politics and how he built Malaysia, believe that this coalition will progressively benefit Sri Lankan political movements.
