HRH Prince Mired who is on an official visit to Sri Lanka from 5-7th March, on the special invitation of the Sri Lankan Government, met with President Maithripala Sirisena today and congratulated Sri Lanka for acceding to the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention. He called on Sri Lanka to promote its norms among those States not yet party in the region, the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention official website wrote today.
The visit is of special significance in the context of Sri Lanka acceding to the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention on December 13, 2017 becoming its 163rd State Party.
During his stay, the Special Envoy will call on the President, Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister of Sri Lanka and will visit to the Northern Province, accompanied by Rehabilitation and Resettlement Minister D. M. Swaminathan, where he will witness the progress of the mine clearance activities being carried out and interact with agencies that clear mines as well as landmine victims.
Sri Lanka has also acceded to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) on 8th February 2016 and the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) on 1st March 2018.
