Digana tensed after communities clash

The death of M.G. Kumarasinghe (41) from Ambala in Medamahanuwara (Kandy district) who succumbed to his injuries at the Kandy hospital last night has caused the tense situation in the area. According to the sources, the fight started over a small traffic issue, but took a different direction when Kumarasinghe was allegedly beaten up by a group of people belonging to another community, leading to communal clashes.

Further, the visits of two Buddhist monks who went to pay their last respect to the victim have added to the outbreak of communal tensions in the surrounding areas.

President Maithripala Sirisena ordered the police to conduct a transparent investigation into the incidents. A strong police contingent has been posted in Digana, Teldeniya to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
