Attending the May Day Rally, Sajith Premadasa said that fertilizer subsidy and free school uniforms for school children must be provided again in order to win in future elections. In several instances, he has stated that Samurdhi subsidy must also be expanded.
The aforesaid ministers further say that Minister Sajith Premadasa, who suggests providing everything for free, must be given the Finance Ministry. They are of the opinion that he will thereafter find money for a welfare economy with all forms of subsidies.
The true situation is that the economy of this country completely depends on foreign loans/ aid. Sajith Premadasa must tell the country how he intends to develop such a country. International organizations, including the World Bank, keep stressing that the subsidies offered for people must be reduced.
But Sri Lankan government still keeps maintaining a welfare economy. If we continue the ‘taking loans – giving for free’ economy, as suggested by Sajith Premadasa, the only thing we will be experiencing is further economic collapse. The duty of a government is to making people’s economies stable by making the country’s economy stable, not defending the government by giving subsidies.
Persons who say that the Finance Ministry must be given to Sajith believes that either he will find money to give subsidies to people, or he will realize at least now that handling the economy is different from simple activities such as distributing sewing machines for women’s societies in Hambanthota.
