Funeral of late Lester James Peiris to be held today

Lester James Peiris, known as the ‘father of Sinhala cinema’, was born on 5th April, 1919 in Colombo. During the last 5 decades, he was involved in making around 20 feature movies and short movies & documentaries as a film director, film producer and a screenwriter.

He was acclaimed for directing movies such as Rekava, Gamperaliya, Nidhanaya, Golu Hadawatha, Kaliyugaya and Awaragira. Wakande Walauwa, directed by Lester James Peiris, was Sri Lanka’s first ever submission for the Academy Award. His exceptional work has inspired generations of Sinhala filmmakers and has been recognized and praised internationally at Cannes International Film Festival, International Film Festival of India, and Venice Film Festival.Furthermore, in 2007 he received Sri Lankabhimanaya, the highest national honor given to a civilian by the Government of Sri Lanka.

The government has declared today (2nd May) as a day of national mourning in respect of Lester James Peiris.
