He was also mayor during the previous regime. He came to be known as the ‘toy pistol mayor’ after he threatened a group of UNP MPs at gunpoint when they were on an inspection tour of the Hambantota port.
MP Namal Rajapaksa especially came from Kashmir, India where he had been coaching women ruggerites, to issue instructions on how to vote at the election. He told the SLPP members of the UC tha it would be ok if the mayor came from the UNP, but they should not allow Eraj, who is supporting Maithripala Sirisena.
The SLPP members then went to Chamal Rajapaksa, who told them that Eraj was their man who got into trouble by working for the Rajapaksas. Noting that Namal now forgot all that, he urged them to support Eraj. When they asked him what Mahinda and Namal would do, Chamal advised them to vote for Eraj and then keep their mobile phones switched off for a day.
That is how the SLPP supported the UPFA’s Eraj to become to mayor.
